Scrimshaw Workshop

 ,

Art Courses Open to the Public

When you think of scrimshaw, whaling ships may come to mind. However, the art of scratching artistic images into materials can be traced back throughout human history and prehistory. Nate Salzman, Education and Exhibit Specialist from the Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, will share with us the history of scrimshaw, and then we will learn how to take simple materials (bone and ink) and simple tools (sandpaper and scribe) and turn them into something simply stupendous: Scrimshaw!

No experience is necessary. If you can draw a straight line, you can scrimshaw. Take home the tools to continue scrimshawing.

The intersection of art and science has been a foundational pillar of NHSM since its founding in 1929.
