Community Science Lectures & Workshops Open to the Public

The Natural History Society of Maryland has teamed up with Digital Maryland to digitize some amazing archival materials including photographs, correspondence, field notes/ledgers and more. The first tranche of materials is now available here: https://collections.digitalmaryland.org/digital/collection/nhsm.

But that’s not all. Much of the material is handwritten. To make it easier to access, search and utilize, it is necessary to transcribe the contents. That’s where you come in. Select documents have been uploaded to the FromThePage, a crowdsourcing platform for archives and libraries where volunteers transcribe, index, and describe historic documents (https://fromthepage.com/digitalmaryland/natural-history-society-of-maryland).

In this presentation – learn more about the work of Digital Maryland, NHSM’s collection then gain the knowledge and skills necessary to participate as a community transcriber.

Digital Maryland is a collaborative, statewide digital preservation program of the Enoch Pratt Free Library/Maryland State Library Resource Center. Users can search and explore historical and cultural documents, images, audio, and videos that record Maryland’s history. Digital Maryland partners with institutions throughout the state to present unique and important primary source materials that document aspects of Maryland history from its inception to the present.
