If you love natural history and reading, then this book club is for you.
This spring, the NHSM Book Club features a book designed to delight naturalists of all ages, The Monster Shark’s Tooth: Canoeing from the Chesapeake Bay into the Ancient Miocene Sea by Peter Vogt, who will be joining us for our discussion scheduled for June 20 at 5:00PM via Zoom. This program is open to NHSM members only as a member benefit. Peter Vogt’s children’s science fiction books are an ingenious blend of adventure stories coupled with wide ranging scientific information. In The Monster Shark’s Tooth: Canoeing from the Chesapeake Bay into the Ancient Miocene Sea, eight-year-old Johann and his grandfather explore Calvert Cliffs and then embark on a magical canoe trip back in time to Miocene Maryland where they encounter red pandas, slingshot deer, bear dogs and a gomphothere—the ancestor of elephants. As they paddle back toward the present, they fend off an attack from a giant megalodon shark, a prehistoric creature whose enormous tooth Johann later finds embedded in the canoe. It’s for kids, but adults will enjoy it too.
Dr. Peter Vogt is a retired marine geophysicist formerly of the Naval Research Laboratory who has studied the sea on research vessels all over the world including in submersibles. He has authored over 150 scientific papers, and a 30-plus-year resident of Calvert County’s Scientists Cliffs.
