BONUS PRESENTATION FOR MAMMOTH SPEAKER SERIES

In addition to being Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and others shared a fascination for mammoths and mastodons. In this special bonus presentation, Dr. Bernard Means from Virginia Commonwealth University will share another side of the founding fathers, fossil collectors. Learn how the quest for mammoth bones was part of a feud between France and the U.S., how Washington searched for fossils during pauses in the Revolutionary War, and why a mammoth was on the list of animals Lewis and Clark were instructed to find.

Dr. Bernard Means is an archaeologist who teaches in the School of World Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is also the Director of the Virtual Curation Laboratory, where he leads a team of students to 3D scan and 3D print fossils, archaeological discoveries, and historical items for teaching, research, and public outreach.
This presentation is part of The Mammoth Speaker Series, one of many programs designed to help educate, excite and engage with the Mammoth Exhibition coming to the Natural History Society of Maryland this fall.
