How We See the Stars – Banneker Planetarium

Field Trips For the Family Open to the Public

Stargazing with our eyes offers a small glimpse of space. But if we use a telescope, a new frontier emerges. Let’s learn how telescopes were developed with a trip to the Benjamin Banneker Planetarium for a viewing of the show, Two Small Pieces of Glass, followed by an outdoor star-observation session, weather permitting.

In the show, we’ll discover how telescopes have evolved since first developed by Galileo in 1608. With spectacular imagery of Saturn’s rings, stellar nurseries, and the spiral structure of galaxies, Two Small Pieces Of Glass shares the way telescope development has helped us understand our place in space. After the show, we will head outside to see a telescope being used first-hand if the skies are clear.

This activity is recommended for ages 12 and up.
