Tim Kent and his wife Laurie are NHSM Fossil Club members that have avidly spent over 30 years collecting fossils throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Recently retired from Baltimore County Public Schools, Tim has a Master of Science Education degree from Loyola University and was an elementary Science educator for 34 years. For the last 17 years of his career, Tim served in the BCPS Office of Science as a STARLAB Portable Planetarium Resource Teacher.
Come and share the fossil adventure that Tim, Laurie, and their friend Matt Kreager experienced recently while collecting in the White River Badlands of northwestern Nebraska! Fossils of The Chadron Formation of the Oligocene Epoch (approximately 34 million years ago) represent a time of terrestrial mammals that included such animals as oreodonts, sabre-tooth cats, titanotheres, and an abundance of terrestrial turtles! Tim, Laurie, and Matt will display fossils collected from their trip at this meeting, and all attendees will be able to take home their very own Oligocene turtle fossil!
This meeting of the NHSM Fossil Club will take place in person at 6908 Belair Rd. If you’d prefer to join us virtually, email the club coordinator (mfalk@marylandnature.org) for a Zoom link and passcode.
Natural History Society of Maryland’s Fossil Club is a group of novice and more experienced collectors who meet to exchange knowledge, help with fossil identification, and discuss fossil locations and other fossil-related topics. Monthly meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month and are open to all.
If you are a fossil enthusiast, please consider joining (https://www.marylandnature.org/club-membership/). NHSM membership is $35 for individuals, $50 for families. The Natural History Society of Maryland is a volunteer-led non-profit organization, so the fee you pay will go directly to support the programs, the nature collections, and the building that make this kind of nature education possible.
