Change is in the air, autumn is around the corner. Green leaves will change to red and gold. Birds will change, some will come, and some will go. Let’s go on a biodiversity hike with Dave Webb to see how these fall changes affect the animals, insects, and fungi around Swan Harbor Farm.
For birding, we hope to see a variety of resident and migrant species, such as Northern Pintail, Ruddy Duck, American Kestrel, Wilson’s Snipe, and Palm Warbler. For smaller creatures, we will focus on arthropods including insects, spiders and often overlooked taxa such as terrestrial isopods, pseudoscorpions, and symphylans.
We will be learning from Dave Webb, editor at the Maryland Biodiversity Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to cataloging the flora and fauna of Maryland. The project promotes conservation, science, and education by building a nature study community. Dave also edits BugGuide.net, vetting the identifications of arthropods photographed by other outdoor enthusiasts, including his own photos.
Swan Harbor Farm, on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay near Havre de Grace, is a 530-acre working farm and special event venue operated by the Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation. Its varied habitats offer good birding and it has become known as a rarity magnet for the county. Habitats include frontage along the Chesapeake Bay, open farm fields, a small freshwater marsh, man-made water impoundments, small woodlots, and a forested stream valley. The diverse habitats have pulled in more than 260 species of birds, making Swan Harbor the #1 eBird hotspot in Harford County.
Dave, like most of the people who lead NHSM field trips, is a volunteer.
