Community Science Lectures & Workshops Special Event

The Old Weather Project is a community science project where volunteers are asked to transcribe weather data from 19th century ship logs to inform scientific analysis of Earth’s climate and climate change. To date, nearly 21,000 volunteers have transcribed over 7.5 million weather observations. You do not need any meteorological training. Old Weather’s thousands of volunteers come from varying backgrounds, interests and geographical areas During this 2-Hour training, you will learn about the project and actively work through some transcriptions so you will be fully ready to contribute to the project as a volunteer.

The session will be led by Kevin R. Wood, Ph.D., Research Scientist, University of Washington, Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean & Ecosystem Studies, and NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.

Community Science is the collaboration of everyday citizens and trained scientists to advance scientific knowledge. Community scientists can help the scientific community in myriad ways including data collection and data analysis. For scientists who don’t have the time or access to do research the way they want to, citizen scientists are stepping in to fill the gap.
