Have you ever taken a stroll, or played a round of golf in the Baltimore Metro area? If so, you could have been slicing your shot into a rare fragment of the Earth’s innards. In this talk, Dr. Guice, geologist and Post Doc Fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, will describe how Baltimore is built on kilometer-sized fragments of an ancient ocean floor, including fragments of the mantle! These pieces of ocean floor and mantle were thrust onto the land during the formation of the Appalachian Mountains ~490 million years ago, which fused together what is now the east coast of the United States with the rest of North America.
Geologist and avid Coventry soccer fan, Dr. Guice grew up in the UK. and moved to Maryland in 2019 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History
