Budburst is a community science program of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Budburst observers from all across the country collect and submit data on the timing of seasonal life events in plants (Phenology and Climate), including blooming, fruiting, and autumn leaf color change. This data helps scientists assess and predict the impacts of climate change on plants and larger ecosystems. At the end of the session, participants will be ready to go out and make their own plant observations as Budburst scientists!
Sarah currently serves as Budburst’s Education Manager, working with informal, K-12, and college educators to engage their students in Budburst research projects. She also serves as co-director of Project Biodiversify, an online repository of teaching materials aimed at increasing accuracy and inclusivity of college biology curriculum. She received a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior from Michigan State University. She has taught field and college courses on a wide range of subjects, including evolution, genetics, ecology, animal behavior, and general biology. She enjoys helping people explore all of the tiny, unobserved wonders in their own backyards.
